::: Protect Your Home :::

By taking some simple precautions and giving your home a “lived in look" before you go away on holidays, you can substantially reduce the risk of your home being broken into whilst you are away.

Consider taking the following steps:

bullet

Ensure all doors are securely locked.

bullet

Let your neighbour know you will be away and leave a contact number for yourself or a relative if possible.

bullet

Arrange for mail to be held or re-directed by the post office or collected by your neighbour.

bullet

Ask your neighbour to watch out for visitors and collect junk mail.  Cancel all deliveries such as newspapers or milk.

bullet

Consider installing automatic timing devices for lights and electrical appliances such as televisions and radios.

bullet

Electrical timers can be used to turn your radio on to talkback programs during the day.

bullet

Disconnect the electrical supply on radio-controlled or electronic garage doors and engage manual lock systems instead.

bullet

Advice the local police of your absence, provide a contact address and telephone number.  Be sure to notify police when you return.  This is especially important if you return home early.

bullet

If cars are left home, secure them and leave keys with a trusted friend or neighbour.

bullet

Engrave or mark valuable property with an identifying mark being a drivers’ licence number preceded by the first letter of the state, eg. “V” for Victoria. If you do not have a drivers’ licence consider using the number of a close friend or relative.

bullet

Turn down the volume on the telephone the day you leave.

bullet

Arrange for someone to cut your lawn and water your garden.

bullet

If you live in a Neighbourhood Watch area consider informing the area coordinator that you will be away.

bullet

Consider asking your neighbour to park a second car in your driveway.
